COP30
Growing demand for animal-sourced foods in the Global South necessitates a balance between environmental sustainability with food security and nutrition. At this year's COP30, the ALive4Climate Alliance comes together to highlight the solutions and pathways for how sustainable livestock can positively benefit adaptation efforts whilst also cutting emissions.
Livestock is often mischaracterized in global debates, as a climate problem rather than a development solution. Yet, in low- and middle-income countries, especially in Africa and Asia, livestock is central to food security, livelihoods, resilience, and rural economies.
Yes, livestock systems must evolve to reduce harm to climate, health, and ecosystems. At the same time, this transition must be socially just, development-focused, and responsive to the growing demand for animal-source foods. Sustainable livestock systems, when properly supported, offer tangible solutions for adaptation, mitigation, and food systems transformation.
One message is clear: we have the solutions but lack investment.
Greater investment in sustainable livestock can deliver a triple win:
- Improve livelihoods and nutrition,
- Build resilience to climate threats like drought, heat stress and flooding, and
- Mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.
