Livestock balancing act: climate, nutrition, and livelihoods

Core message

Agriculture faces urgent and interconnected challenges. It must achieve climate goals while simultaneously helping the 673 million people who experienced hunger last year and ensuring farmers earn a sustainable living.

Livestock plays a pivotal role in this equation. Animal agriculture represents 12% of global greenhouse gas emissions, while supporting the livelihood of 1.3 billion people and providing nutrition to many more. It is deeply woven into economies and cultures, and its future must support the climate while meeting the needs of growing populations.

This panel will explore how to align livestock development with the global climate agenda. Drawing on innovations in science, policy, and practice, speakers will examine how livestock systems are faced with the challenge of supporting 1.5°C climate target, while simultaneously addressing food security and livelihoods.

The discussion will bring together experts to discuss: How can livestock systems help meet nutritional needs and sustain livelihoods while continuing to make progress on climate goals. How can innovations in areas like livestock health, breeding, and feed deliver ‘triple wins’ for climate, hunger and livelihoods? What steps are needed to help livestock with both adaptation and mitigation?

Participants will leave with insights into pathways that balance food, climate, and livelihoods, ensuring that livestock, when managed wisely, can support sustainable development.
