Women's empowerment
Abstract
Protect women's ownership of livestock.
Because livestock are often the first stepping stone towards women’s economic empowerment, policy and legal environments should recognize and protect women’s ownership of livestock.
Livestock are an easy and quick source of income for women, just selling a few eggs or some milk provides a reliable income.
Women who access and control livestock assets improve the health, education and food security of their households. 90% of income under the control of women is channeled back into their households or local communities, compared with only 30-40% for men.
Gendered livestock development programs will empower women to own and manage livestock and their economic benefits. Such programs will also enhance more equitable benefit sharing.
Because livestock are often seen as assets (and self-regenerating assets), they can also be used towards the economic empowerment of women, providing access to higher and more stable income and opening routes to credit and insurance.
